As the 25 minutes finished, Jenny got to her feet and moved to the windows. Inella and Morar followed her.
She turned to the couple of half-aliens.
"I wish we had more to give them than lies. But I don't think the truth would be a good idea."
"What do you mean," Inella asked, frowning."We never lie to our people."
Jenny blinked. "Never?"
"Never," Morar agreed, seriously.
"It is gutsy," Tracy Halloway murmured. "Our government always lied, as a rule. Always repeating that the truth could cause panic."
Inella laughed. "We don't panic easily. Moreover, we will need their help if we are to save the two races from extinction."
"It is true," Alfred agreed. "What are we going to do, Jenny?"
"If we want to go back to Earth, Alfred, and save the aliens' species at the same time, we will need the human women on the moon."
Morar and Inella gulped.
"We will need the Council approval," the alien woman exchanged glances with the governor. "They were not screened."
Jenny turned fast to them.
"Just listen to yourselves. What about your DNA problem? How do you expect to solve that? I told you your old peers created a problem. Are you interested in being the pets of parasites? Because we humans won't be. We will go to the Moon. Our women and men are viable for reproduction once we take them from stasis. We will have a reproduction facility open and running, and in few months, a batch of human babies will come out of there. We are offering you a way out of the gigantic mess you created."
Sudden silence took up, everyone thinking of the dire future. The AIs in the women's brains were real. Suddenly, Chuck's voice sounded in the large room's sound system.
He seemed hurt. "Don't you want our progeny? What do you intend to do?"
Jenny had to smile. The little critters sounded so human she felt for them.
"No, Chuck, it is not that. But we need more babies than we can beget. Creating the reproduction facility on the Moon will provide the human race with more children, making the Earth's colonization faster. They will have an AI like you, guys. I will program the new ones myself so that they help the new humans to live on Earth. This way, we can avoid the destruction that happened before. Your main purpose will be the same."
Alfred sounded happy. "I knew you would come to terms with our partnership, Jenny."
"No, I didn't. I said before. You are sneaky. The new AIs I will program will be telling the truth in any circumstance. I am taking a page from the aliens' book. Lies never helped the human race."
"I am sorry if I tried to deceive you, Jenny," Alfred apologized.
"No, you aren't sorry. Just afraid of what I will do."
"What about the people out there? What are we telling them? I mean, how much of the truth?"
Morar and Inella breathed deeply.
"Let's gather the Council," Inella decided. "I'd ask you to stay, Jenny. We need to make them understand the situation."
Jenny smiled, and it was almost malevolent.
"Alfred, Chuck, every AI present here, please call your peers in the hybrids' brains. It is time you came out of the shadows. Als, tell your friends part of the aliens' Council we need a meeting now," she asked.
Morar chuckled. "I guess it will make them understand. Almost everyone in the Council is hybrid."
"Is that so?" Trish laughed. "Go ahead, Alfred. Let's call the grown-ups for a nice little chat."
"Done, Jenny," and the cheeriness in the AI's voice was amusing.
Many in the room snorted as the images of Counselors started to pop up. Round eyes and blubbering questions exploded as soon as they saw the human women.
Trisha's New Yorker's whistle stopped them, then she talked to her AI.
"They make me dizzy. Can I have an Earth sky to calm me down, Hugh?"
The AI replied with a smile in his voice. "Sure, Trish. I understand it is overwhelming."
As soon as the AIs were silenced, the Counselors sighed in relief.
"What is going on, Morar? And what are you doing here, Inella?"
One of them asked, and the others nodded.
Inella touched her arm to call the Council members who weren't hybrids. "Let's wait for the others. It is a long explanation.."
The others came with surprise and hope in their voices. Looking around, the High Counselor nodded.
"I see you are happier now, ladies," the old man said with a smile at Tracy Halloway.
"I doubt you will be in a few minutes,'" she answered.
Killah, a male Counselor from Mercury told the others. He was appalled.
"There is a voice in my mind. He asked me for a name and said he has been in my brain since I was born. I thought it was the summer fever."
Jenny chuckled. "No. It is a different kind of bug."
Many other Counselors related the same kind of experience.
The human women sat in the chairs, waiting for the aliens and half aliens to calm down.
Professor Halloway interrupted
"We don't have much time. Let me explain things,"
As she told the Council what was going on, they got quieter. In the end, the silence was heavy in the room.
"We have a problem. We can't ask for the Earth's sky to calm us down. The AI will notice it a ruse," Killah complained.
Jenny shrugged. "It doesn't matter the excuse. They are programmed to obey. If you ask for the Earth's sky, it will give you."
"God news always come, " one of the Counselors murmured the old human saying.
"It sure does," Trisha nodded.
"Now, we need your approval to tell the people who are fastening with us the truth. The DNA problem, your reason for the genocide, and everything will have to come out. Because you might not lie, but you omit a lot," Jenny declared, her eyes turned to the window.
The sound of another anthem was reverberating on the buildings on the street below. Moira's clear voice soothed the nerves.
The Council became silent once again. Inella stood up.
"I told the humans we always tell our people the truth. Are we changing this today?"
"No, not a chance," Killah stood too. "The truth it is."
Getting to his feet, the High Counselor smiled with bitterness.
"It sounds like my retirement came, after all. Our people will never want as High Counselor the man who approved and participated in such heinous crimes."
"You did, didn't you?" Jenny moved her eyes to the floor, her fists closed. "Be glad you don't have a parasite who controls your movements, takes control of your mouth, and makes it impossible to speak your mind. Retirement seems a very nice option to my eyes. You deserved jail."
Silence took the room again.
The old man's voice was tired. "Yes, young lady. It might come to that. If it does, every living counselor and scientist involved will die. We don't take murder with kind eyes."
"I don't believe you are trying to make us pity you," Trish replied.
"Death is too much," Professor Halloway declared. "I will talk in your favor if it comes to that."
The old man turned to the woman. "I am so sorry I was a coward and went with the majority. I should have fought against killing your race."
"I should have's make no difference. It is too late for that. Let's work with what we indeed have," Jenny shrugged.
Inella lifted a hand. "We must make a pronunciation in the Council's name."
"I am the High Counselor. I will make it. And if my people ask for my life, I am ready to give it," the High Counselor breathed in and stood straighter.
"What about the AI in our heads," one of the youngest Counselors asked.
"Make friends with it," Jenny suggested. "It will be there for as long as you live. Are you married? Is your wife a hybrid?"
"As a matter of fact, yes. But our little girl is only a baby."
"She has one too. Do you understand what your people did? I suggest you track down every child and woman born from the women you brought here. After you do that, you need to tell me how many of them are pregnant. I only can reprogram the AIs still in the womb. Otherwise, these super-intelligent critters will be running your race, and you will never notice it."
Professor Halloway looked around at the Council.
"Look around, Jenny. It is a little too late for Ithat, Jenny. Most of the Counselor is a hybrid.
Morar gulped.
"We have so much to explain."
Jenny laughed. "I would hate to be in your shoes, High Counselor."
"I hate to be in my shoes, Jenny Winston. But I am glad we stopped being cowardly and woke you up before things were out of control."
Jenny walked to the window to watch the people below.
"They deserve so much better. You have good people here. They are kind, helpful, and brave. I am glad we can help them."
Tracy Halloway and the other human women joined Jenny and stood together at the window.
"I believe we can talk in the name of every human woman. Your race will have the best from us," Tracy Halloway declared, and the others nodded.
Inella smiled. "Mother said you would say just that."
"Haven't I", the woman who had been silent all that time questioned, smiling at her daughter.
"We must prepare to go to our Moon. Do you have a colony there?"
Professor Halloway asked, and Morar shook his head.
"No, we decided you had the right of your graveyard."
Trisha swallowed hard. "You see, your only kindness to our people will save you. Your egotistical actions almost destroyed you."
The Council bowed their heads in shame.
"Let's do that pronouncement. It is atonement time," the High Counselor finally said.
"No, High Counselor. It is hope and survival time. Let's go to the Moon, make the reproduction facility, and save our races both."
Jenny's strong voice made Morar smile.
Maybe, just maybe, his people's generous attitudes had managed to open a little door in the woman's heart.
A man could hope.
